From the grapevine
Luckett Vineyards announced last week Dominic Rivard will be joining the Pete Luckett project as winemaker.
With over 15 years in the wine-making industry, Rivard is an experienced and award-winning winemaker, author and founding director of the Fruit Wines of Canada Association.
“Having made wines in regions still trying to prove themselves on the world stage, I can fully appreciate the absolute need to put quality first and express the terroir creatively,” Rivard says.
“This is what I intend to do at Luckett Vineyards.”
The new winery, on a 100-acre farm in the Gaspereau Valley, has 10 acres of established vines. Luckett plans to expand to 25 acres.

Railtown in legal limbo?
Wolfville chief administrative officer Roy Brideau was asked by a councillor April 19 if the Railtown development in Wolfville was still in legal limbo.
Brideau said he understood the property’s tax accounts had been cleared and the receiver was working with the condo owners.
“It will be going up for sale,” he said.
No more horsin’ around
Swagman’s in South Berwick has reined in its horses.
The tack shop, feed store and grooming services are gone, as owner Sandra Grimmer has called it a day.
“The time came - I had 10 years in the business, five here at this store,” Grimmer says. “We stayed open until we sold off all the stock.”
The store closed in March and the property, on Highway 1, is now for sale.
“Horse people are good friends, and I met a lot of new people,” she says.
Tim Van Zoost, another horse friend and owner of Chisholm’s Pharmacy in Aylesford, has actually picked up the Purina lines of horse and dog feeds Swagman’s was known for.
