On the day it officially began accepting nominations for its annual business awards, the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce announced changes to the awards program, including new award categories, a revamped judging process and a new nomination process.

The chamber’s ninth annual business awards dinner is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Rodd Grand Hotel.

Among the changes to the award categories are business-of-the-year awards recognizing small, medium and large businesses. Small is considered one to 10 employees, medium is 11 to 30 and large 31 and up.

There is a rising star business award for businesses less than five years old or which have had a new owner within the last five years.

There is an award recognizing a business’s “community impact” and also an award category focusing on hospitality and tourism.

Rounding out the award categories – and these are not new – are one for export achievement, another for customer service.

The judging will be done by some of last year’s winners, which is a new approach for the chamber.

Nomination forms are available through the chamber’s website or its Facebook page. The nomination deadline is Sept. 30.

Jeff Little, dealer principal and general manager of Murray GM, will be the evening’s MC.

Unlike past awards dinners, the plan is to have no guest speaker, but instead focus on celebrating the accomplishments of the local business community, notably those of the award nominees.

Those who attend the event can expect a “fun-filled” and “fast-paced” evening and “a few surprises,” the chamber says.

Tickets for the dinner can be purchased by contacting the chamber office after Monday, Oct. 6.

The chamber formally announced the opening of the nomination process – as well as the changes to this year’s awards program – Sept. 9 at a brief gathering of chamber representatives, business people and others in downtown Yarmouth.
