With the love and support of his wife, Crystal, the 49-year-old Waterville man has cleared another hurdle, making his dream of having his own delivery business a reality. Pleasant Valley Courier is now officially registered and is looking for clients.

“It’s something I’ve had in mind for a while but didn’t pursue it,” McCormack said.

He lives life from the perspective that every day is a sunny day. McCormack said he’s faced many challenges over the years; especially finding work, but he’s hasn’t let it get the better of him.

He recognizes that everyone has challenges to overcome and he and Crystal are ready to take the plunge into self-employment. McCormack took a course through the Acadia Centre for Small Business and Entrepreneurship to help prepare. When it comes to can-do attitude, the McCormack’s have it in spades.

“You name it, I do it,” McCormack said. “There are so many avenues that we could take.”

The delivery business will serve businesses and residents in the Valley from Digby to Windsor. McCormack will deliver dry cleaning, prescriptions, parcels, documents, small grocery orders, flowers or whatever else he can get from point A to B using their Honda Civic. He said they’d consider investing in a larger vehicle once the business gets established.

McCormack said there are many courier services out there but he plans to set Pleasant Valley apart by offering a personalized touch, being “more like a neighbour.”

He said his mom is 90 years old now and he has been driving her to appointments and helping her with errands. He sometimes helps his sister with errands, too. This got him thinking that there must be a lot of seniors and other people in the community who could use some help.

Crystal, who will serve as the office manager, said Darrell has wanted to do this for 10 years or more. They’ve been together for six years now, married for one. When he told her about the idea, she said, “let’s go for it.” They’ve been working to get the business off the ground for six or seven months now.

Crystal said Darrell is “friendly, helpful and on time.” She said his punctuality is one of his best traits, one that will serve him well running a delivery service. The McCormack’s recognize that the only way to make it work is to try and that’s what they intend to do.
