Giant Tiger has chosen Yarmouth as the site for a new store.

In the process it will create around 30 full-time and part-time jobs when the store opens in May 2015.

The new Giant Tiger, which will be approximately 20,000 square feet in size, will be located at 130 Starrs Road Plaza, which is the strip mall that houses Reitmans, PetValu, Dollarama and Bulk Barn.

"We are very excited to be coming to Yarmouth," says Greg Farrell, president and COO of Giant Tiger Stores Limited. "The town of Yarmouth is the regional centre of southwestern Nova Scotia and that, combined with the busy tourist traffic, makes it an ideal complement to the Giant Tiger family of stores."

Aside from the jobs created when the store opens, there will also be work created during the construction and renovation phase.

A spokesperson for Starrs Road Plaza says there will be some movement within the plaza of existing tenants to make way for the Giant Tiger. Some businesses will be relocated within the plaza.

Alison Scarlett, the manager of public relations and community activation for Giant Tiger Stores Ltd., says the company always strives to meet the needs of its communities.

“Our store team becomes actively involved in the merchandizing and selection of goods that will be in a store,” Scarlett said. “We do that so we really are a compliment to the communities we call home. We’re not like other retailers where it’s sort of a carbon copy of everything you see from store, to store, to store.”

Scarlett said they don’t have exact dates yet as to when they’ll be posting for employment positions but she says it’s a December timeframe for supervisory positions and January for associates.

She says people interested in submitting résumés and cover letters are always welcome to do so by email to

The company has also started a Yarmouth Giant Tiger Facebook page where it will keep the public updated on the progress of the new store.
