Plenty of options for family fun
It could be reasonably said that a lot of us spend a lot of time nurturing a sedentary lifestyle. The reasons are complex, but one factor is the perception that is somewhat difficult to access or choose an activity that can be inclusive of everyone.

Another challenge is to find an activity that the younger folks, specifically teenagers, will find attractive. The "Ah Mom do I have to?" response can be particularly frustrating. In Digby County we have several inclusive options that require varying levels of activity and skill.

My family preferences include fly-fishing, bowling and hikes, but lately I have been hearing a great deal about a relatively new business in the community – Sure Shot Paintball on 233 Robinson Weir Road (245-8885). It is my understanding that paintball is one of the fastest growing competitive recreational activities in North America. It combines all the elements of a childhood hide and seek with physical activity and slapstick fun. The operators of this business insist that all appropriate safety gear be worn and that the activity is conducted in a sportsman like manner. The facility is available most weekends and reservations are suggested.

Fly-fishing is a sport for all ages and all levels of expertise. The late Queen Mother was an avid participant. The basic equipment can be obtained with a minimal investment. This activity combines a moderate level of physical activity with the skill development and provides the participant with quality contemplation time outside in the fresh air.

Universally a popular choice, bowling is a sport that welcomes all ages and abilities. This activity, a birthday party favourite when my son was younger, it is still of great interest. One of the highlights of this activity is that on rare occasions I can actually out score him. Wilson’s Bowling Centre in Conway (245-4444) is fully accessible.

Another option is the family hike with or without a picnic lunch. We have a multitude of well-marked trails in our area. Unfortunately the recent winter like blast has left some of these wonderful venues rather soggy, but very soon it will be possible to walk at your own pace and enjoy the natural splendor. All you need for this is a good pair of footwear, clothing appropriate to the weather, a water bottle and time to relax. The hike also gives the participant an opportunity to engage in activities such as bird watching, rock collecting and plant identification. There are even trial sites that are fully accessible.

Finally, if all else fails pick up a Frisbee or a ball of some kind and drag everybody outside. Family outings are the stuff that builds strong relationships and positive memories.

Everybody wins.
