Intentionally-lit grass fire, trail damaged by fire and vehicle on fire keep RCMP busy

During the period of March 22 to April 9, the Yarmouth Rural Detachment responded to 122 calls for service.

These calls included, but were not limited to: 14 traffic related calls; 12 calls each of theft, false alarms, and break and enter; 11 assistance calls of a civil nature; nine damage to property calls; seven abandoned 911 calls; six calls each of assault and other Criminal Code matters; four calls relating to suspicious persons; three calls each of impaired drivers, breach of probation, motor vehicle accidents, uttering threats, peace bond summons, and Protection of Property Act; one assault with a weapon causing bodily harm; one mischief to data and one assistance to a United States police force.

Some noteworthy investigations included:

• March 25 at 1:52 p.m., police responded to a call of a dangerous driver on Highway 103 near Tusket; no plate number was obtained and the vehicle was not located.

• March 26 at 1:43 p.m., police responded to a call of a motor vehicle accident in Dayton; one vehicle could not be driven and had to be towed. There were no injuries.

• March 26 at 2:48 p.m., police responded to a call of an elderly woman walking down the middle of the roadway. She was located and Adult Protection was contacted.

• March 28 at 10:24 a.m., police responded to two calls of vehicles being broken into overnight in Arcadia. The vehicles had been left unlocked and were not damaged.

• March 30 at 10:59 p.m., police responded to a call in Overton of a person intentionally lighting a grass fire and fleeing the scene. A licence plate number had been obtained and the suspect eventually located.

• March 31 at 5:22 a.m., police responded to a call of an assault at the Tuna Wharf in Wedgeport. One adult male was air lifted to Halifax with head injuries. Another adult male was arrested later that day and has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon. The investigation is ongoing.

• April 1 at 5:04 p.m., police responded to a complaint of dangerous driving in the Port Maitland area. The vehicle and driver were located by police a short time later.

• April 3 at 8:17 p.m., a break and enter into a cottage in the Wellington area was reported as having occurred in the past month. The matter is under investigation.

• April 4 at 7:55 p.m., police responded to a call of damage to property by fire at the Uktobuk Trail in Arcadia. A grass fire had spread and damaged a wooden boardwalk. The young persons responsible were identified by police.

• April 5 at 5:22 p.m., three break and enters into cottages in the Brazil Lake area were reported. An investigation revealed more breaks in the area. These were thought to have occurred within the last week.

• April 5th at 11:08 p.m., police responded to a call of a vehicle on fire on Highway 308. No one was injured and no charges were laid.

• April 6 at 2:40 a.m., police responded to a single-motor vehicle accident in Dayton; a lone male was transported to hospital and released. There was significant damage to the vehicle and a telephone pole.

• April 6 at 5:55 p.m., break and enters into three sheds in the Deerfield area was reported; items with copper in them were stolen. The matter is under investigation.

• April 9 at 11:48 a.m., police responded to a call at a West Pubnico home where the occupants advised that an elderly male had simply walked into their house. The male was arrested, lodged until sober and charged under the Liquor Control Act.
