Kings County council has set a date for a special election in Polling District 1 to fill the vacancy created by the recent passing of former councillor and deputy warden Bert Greene.
Council is required under the Municipal Elections Act to set a date for a special election within four weeks to fill a vacancy created by a councillor who passes away. The special election must be held on a Saturday not more than 11 weeks after the meeting of council at which the election date was set.
Municipal Clerk Ann Longley said, following a review of possible dates, staff is recommending that council set Saturday, May 26 as the special election day. According to the Municipal Elections Act, the nomination deadline would be Wednesday, April 25.
An advance poll would be held Tuesday, May 22, the fourth day before the ordinary polling day. Longley said staff recommended Thursday, May 17 as the first advance poll date. Staff recommended also the appointment of Heather Lightfoot as the returning officer for the special election.
Councillors voted in favour of the recommendations regarding the special election at the Tuesday, April 3 session.
