Yarmouth volunteer wins national hockey prize
John Murphy, a multi-tasking local hockey volunteer, has earned special recognition in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Murphy is this year’s RBC Local Hockey Leader for Nova Scotia, one of 13 volunteers (one for each Hockey Canada branch) recognized today by RBC Insurance, with support from Hockey Canada and the Hockey Hall of Fame. The winners, who will also receive a signed Team Canada jersey, were chosen from more than 1,000 nominations received from across the country.
“John Murphy somehow manages to balance several teams, refereeing, meetings and fundraising events,” said John Mackinnon in his nomination essay. “He also consistently supports programs to keep registration costs at a minimum. I can imagine no man who is more worthy of the title ‘Local Hockey Leader’.”
As outlined in Mackinnon’s nomination essay, Murphy has coached multiple teams per season (including the high school team) for more than 15 years, is a level 4 referee and serves on the local minor hockey council.
RBC Insurance will donate $10,000 to the program in Murphy’s name. Murphy is also offered an all-expenses trip to attend a special ceremony unveiling a display honouring the 2006-07 RBC Local Hockey Leaders at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. A banner recognizing the achievement will also be raised in the community.
“RBC Insurance is proud to recognize truly dedicated hockey volunteers like John Murphy,” said Neil Skelding, President and CEO, RBC Insurance. “Hockey is a way of life in many Canadian communities, and this simply wouldn’t happen without volunteers.”
