This March, the Wolfville branch of the Canadian University Women’s Club will hold its 40th annual book sale. Members seek not only donations of books, but special magazines, CDs, DVDs, videos, puzzles and games.
The sale is set for March 30–31. One of the organizers, Winnie Horton, says most net proceeds of the event go toward educational projects. Last year the event raised $15,000 and collected 596 boxes of books.
Among the community programs that will be assisted by the branch this year are: the regional library, regional music, art and science fairs, the Apple Tree Landing Children's Centre and The Flower Cart.
Contributions were also made to the Manning Chapel Endowment Fund at Acadia University, and a scholarship for the Women's Studies program in the amount of $1,500 will be awarded this term. “We also donated $1,500 last year as a way of thanking Acadia for the use of the space at the Theatre Festival building,” Horton said.
Another $4,000 was added to the Dr. Marion Elder Grant Fellowship, which supports $10,000 for a post-graduate program for a female student.
Non-monetary contributions include donations of paperbacks to the EKM Hospital Auxiliary in Port Williams and 17 boxes of textbooks that last year went to the Sydney Rotary Club and were sent to Cameroon, she noted.
”Recreation management students assist us with discards and the actual moving of books.” Horton adds, “we provide them with $300 as an honorarium.”
”All in all, the CFUW Wolfville Book Sale reaches out in many ways,” Horton said, “and we’re proud of our 40 years of booking.” In order to donate, call 542-2352 before March 10.
