Kings fire lines - Feb. 15
In the month of January, Kingston firefighters responded to the following calls: two fire alarms, two motor vehicle collisions, one car fire, two mutual aid calls, one smoke in house condition and one chimney fire. The annual firefighters’ banquet is February 17.

Kentville firefighters responded to two chimney fires last week, both on Highway 12. The first occurred around lunchtime Feb. 6 and the second around suppertime Feb. 7. One took place near the edge of town and the other in South Alton.

Kentville responded to four motor-vehicle-related calls last week, although two occurred within the jurisdiction of New Minas. The other two occurred during a skiff of snow Feb. 5, one in front of the Evergreen Home for Special Care on Park Street and the other in Coldbrook. A lady banged her knee up pretty badly during the incident on Park Street but, otherwise, no serious injuries were reported.

Kentville responded to a total of 300 calls in 2006. Motor vehicle incidents were up 10 per cent over 2005, even though the department responded to 64 fewer calls.

Chief Ripley reminds residents to be careful driving in icy conditions and to “be careful what you burn.” Sometimes people run their woodstoves wide-open during cold weather and this can lead to increased incidents of chimney fires.

The Greenwich Fire Department responded to a house fire on Highway 1 just west of Hennigar's Farm Market Feb. 5. The interior of the house was destroyed, but Chief Randy Schofield says it appears the home was fully insured. The Wolfville Fire Department provided mutual aid.

The Port Williams Fire Department responded to a mattress fire at Stage 2 Furniture by the railroad tracks in Greenwich, while Greenwich firefighters were busy battling the house fire Feb. 5.

Chief Philip Porter said Port Williams firefighters also rendered assistance at the scene of an industrial accident at Great Valley Juices Feb. 6.

The New Minas Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide alarm sounding on Marina Drive Feb. 5.

New Minas firefighters responded to a two-vehicle collision on Prospect Road Feb. 6. There were no injuries reported.

Simultaneously, New Minas firefighters responded to a car fire in the Sobeys parking lot. There were no injuries reported, but Chief Jim Redmond said the car was a write-off.

New Minas responded to a single-vehicle collision on Commercial Street by the bowling alley Feb. 6. There were no injuries reported.

The Canning Fire Department responded to a call for medical assistance in Kingsport Feb. 5.

Canning firefighters responded to a call for medical assistance on Cavelle Terrace Feb. 7.

Canning also responded to a smoke condition on Church Street in Kingsport Feb. 9.

February 7 at 7:38 p.m. Berwick and District firefighters were called to 112 Union St. for a chimney fire. Firefighters arrived to find no fire showing and went to work to control the problem. Once the pipes were cleaned and the heating unit checked, fire units cleared the scene. The incident was terminated at 8:26 p.m.
