Students and staff at Avon View High School welcomed 12 students and two teachers from Alexander High School, Cancun, Mexico Jan. 9.
The group is part of the AVRSB School-to-School Cultural Exchange Program and it will stay in the Windsor area until Jan. 21. Students from Avon View High School visited Alexander High for two weeks in March 2006.
During their stay, students attended a Mooseheads hockey game, went curling and were given some slope instruction at Ski Martock Jan. 13 with approximately 80 other international students that are part of the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board Nova Scotia International Student Program (NSISP).
Next week the students plan to travel to Halifax and take in the sights, visit the Museum of the Atlantic and check out the provincial Legislature.
Tina Moyles has been a NSISP coordinator for three years, since Alexander High School’s involvement with Avon View High. She says the first thing they all said when they arrived was, “We want to see snow. That was soon followed by “it’s so cold!
However, the group braved it out on the slopes, had the benefit of milder temperatures compared to what the region has experienced in the past 48 hours, and enjoyed a bit of Martock culture.
Smiles on the faces of the Cancun students while sliding down the bunny hill told the tale. It may have been something new and challenging, but they loved it!
