Queens RCMP issue warning after attempted child abduction
An unidentified man driving a black car in the Liverpool area, asked a girl to get in his car, luring her by saying she could see his dog.
This incident happened Dec. 20, 2006 and the male driver has not yet been caught.
Constable Grant Webber with the Queens RCMP says incidents such as this one rarely occur and in the ten years he has been in Liverpool he doesn’t know of any child that has gotten into a vehicle and taken away by a stranger.
That indicates to him the children around here are fairly well educated.
He says if a child is alone with a stranger they should scream and make noise to draw attention and scare off the attacker.
Parents should educate their children about the risks of talking to strangers.
Constable Webber says a parent should tell their child not to talk to a stranger, not to accept anything from them and do not get into a vehicle with a stranger.
Explain to the child as well that strangers will use ploys such as telling the child they can see a puppy if they go with the stranger.
Constable Webber says if parents would like more information they can reach him at 354-5721.
He also teaches a course on Internet safety for parents. He says these days there are more Internet related incidents than ones involving strangers picking up children in vehicles.
