Man facing sexual assault charges due back in court Monday
Yarmouth RCMP claims 12-year-old girl was assaulted in a residence early Wednesday morning
A 30-year-old man is facing a charge of sexual assault and other sexual assault-related charges after Yarmouth Town RCMP responded to complaint early Wednesday morning of an alleged sexual assault against a 12-year-old girl.
According to the RCMP, an individual unlawfully entered a residence in the early morning hours of Jan. 10. Police say the individual went to a bedroom of the home and sexually assaulted the young girl.
After the suspect left the residence, police say the girl woke her mother to tell her what had happened. Police claim the suspect was known to the girl and her family.
Police apprehended a suspect shortly before the supper hour on Wednesday evening. He was taken into custody without incident. The individual they arrested is Jason Trevor Hipson of Yarmouth County.
The accused appeared in Barrington provincial court on Thursday morning. He was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is slated for Yarmouth provincial court on Monday.
Charges the police have laid include sexual assault, touching a person under the age of 14 for a sexual purpose, being unlawfully in a dwelling and forcible confinement.
The accused had been released on parole from Dorchester federal penitentiary in June of last year, where he had been serving a two-and-a-half year sentence for armed robbery, unlawful use of a firearm and a break and enter. Corrections Canada immediately issued a warrant of apprehension when the police were trying to locate the individual prior to his arrest.
