Two Windsor youths got off easy this week when their truck skidded off the road and into someone’s front yard.
The accident took place on the Windsor Back Rd. Monday morning as the two were on their way to Martock. Snow had quickly changed to freezing rain, making driving treacherous and catching the driver off-guard.
“When we were on the highway the roads were fine, said Jeff Harding, driver of the vehicle. “Then when we hit the back road, we realized how bad the road was. It totally took me by surprise, he said.
Harding said he was going only about 50 kilometers an hour when the accident took place.
“I had started slowing down for the stop sign at the end of the road because I knew it was slippery, he said.
However, speed made little difference once he lost control of the truck 40-50 feet away from the scene.
“As soon as I put the truck into third gear, we started losing control. I tried to straighten out, but once we started swerving I knew that was it, Harding said.
The two say they felt lucky they didn’t hit a light-pole or go over the steep bank on the opposite side of the road.
“We knew we were going to land somewhere, but not like this, said passenger Evan Redden.
There were no reported injuries or vehicle damage, only a minor pruning to a hedgerow of young bushes.
After being towed out by the property owner, the pair was amazed to see that the skidmarks ran directly between the rows of bushes.
The only consequence for the young men was cleaning up the roadside garbage, which was propelled into the yard during the accident.
