Hillcrest Academy students and teachers presented a plaque and Tim Hortons gift certificates to Sgt. David Camp last Wednesday.
The children had a walkathon fundraiser last month to support the Canadian Troops in Afghanistan and were able to raise $2025 to purchase gift certificates for Tim Hortons.
“Just ask your parents how important coffee is to them and multiply it by this much, said Sgt. Camp to the children opening his arms wide.
Sgt. Camp was able to come home from overseas for the holidays to visit with his family.
He will be leaving for Afghanistan in the next three to four weeks where he will distribute the donated certificates amongst the Canadian troops stationed in Kandahar.
“It is absolutely amazing for a small community to do this, said Sgt. Camp, “it’s really quite humbling and we’re very appreciative.
The idea for the fundraiser was from teacher Eric Dominey and organized by principal Steven Pippy.
Sgt. Camp also explained his role in the Canadian Armed Forces via a slide show presentation with a question period after.
“Is it sandy there? asked one child.
“Yes it’s very sandy, responded Sgt. Camp. “Wouldn’t water be better than coffee? asked another child.
“We also drink water but enjoy the coffee, were some of the questions and answers given.
He explained during the presentation the conditions in Afghanistan and his job.
“Part of my job is to clear mines and booby traps, he explained.
His family was also at the ceremony.
“He’s been away a lot so it’s nice to have him home for a few days, said Kim Camp, Sgt. Camp’s wife.
