Fire destroys Cambridge garage
Sunday December 31 at 13:41, Waterville and District Fire Department was called to a garage fire on the Annapolis Valley First Nations Reserve in Cambridge.
A cloud of heavy black smoke could be seen in the air for some distance. While en route, Chief Wayne Johnstone requested mutual aid from Kentville and Berwick to provide tankers. Berwick also provided a stand-in pumper and crew at the nearby Cornwallis River bridge on Cambridge Road. Paramedics were also called to the scene as a precaution, but there were no injuries.
The first fire crews on the scene found the approximately 15-foot by 20-foot garage fully engulfed. The heat was so intense, it melted the vinyl siding on the east end of the house. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire quickly, keeping the home from further damage, just as the fire started to make its way inside. A vehicle parked in the driveway in front of the garage was heavily damaged. The garage was totally destroyed.
An investigation into the cause was carried out by the department. Chief Johnstone says it has been determined to be accidental.
Fire crews and equipment left the scene just after 16:00.
