Snowboarders and skiers eagerly anticipated opening day at Martock Dec. 21, more than a week later than last year’s opening. Owner Heather Boylan says they try to open the first week in December, but increasingly mild winters have made that difficult.
The amount of snowfall has little effect, Boylan said. “We don’t depend on natural snow. We’ve always made our own.?
Cold temperatures are what’s needed to keep the man-made snow on the ground. Boylan says last season’s snow-making was hampered because temperatures fluctuated in a matter of hours.
However, “we’ve had better snow-making weather this year because it has stayed consistently cold for several days at a time. Last year we could only produce snow for eight hours at a time.?
