Food bank reopens after flood
The Shelburne Loyalist Food Bank will be reopen Dec. 13, but at the Trinity United Church Hall.
The location is only temporary until the basement at the Anglican Church Hall is restored after a massive Dec. 1 flood.
Rain apparently poured through the doors of the hall. Both church members and food bank volunteers were forced to move quickly to save furniture, food and other items in the basement.
The food bank was closed last Wednesday.
Food bank vice-chair Celia Melanson said they lost a lot of groceries as the waters rose above the first level of their shelves, some donated food was still in boxes, they had to stop a delivery from Feed Nova Scotia, and their freezer shorted out.
“It’s hard to know where we stand right now, she said. A food drive at Tim Hortons and ongoing efforts by Sobeys are helping, she said, but more is needed.
Melanson said there is a positive side to the story. She said she was attending a Basement Theatre production at The Osprey Arts Centre when, soon-after, they found out about the flood.
‘We had a large crew who helped move everything to the Trinity United Church Hall - teenagers and adults, people with trucks, some were driving.
“A good group of teenagers showed up. My husband said this would be a good picture for the newspaper because it shows how a community can pull together.
The food bank serves 80-100 families each month. They require non-perishable food items or, of course donations.
The food bank recently received official charitable status, meaning donations, which can be dropped off at CBDC Shelburne or mailed to Box 1403 are tax deductible.
The food bank is open from 9:30 am-to-3 pm.
Dec. 20 is the last day the charity is open before Christmas.
