They are rebounding, cleaning up the mess and getting on with their operations.
Fire destroyed two barns at Charlie and Doris Keddy’s farm in Lakeville Oct. 30. There was no time to save anything because the high winds that day rapidly engulfed the buildings. Hay and other materials were destroyed.
The final tally of the loss is still being determined. However, the structures were insured and no cattle were lost.
Doris Keddy said Friday that things are just about cleaned up with the metal and other debris being sent off. During the fire, she noted, “we had no time to recover anything.
At this point, “we’re trying to keep on going with our operations. We have to keep moving on. The cattle operation was one part of the farm.
It employs a number of people in various operations including strawberry and raspberry nurseries, and work has to continue. Many people depend on the farm for their incomes.
Keddy said they have had offers from fellow producers to take cattle to care for or to provide hay to help out. There is lots of help coming in from the farm community.
Kentville Fire Chief Shawn Ripley said the causes of the fires have been ruled “undetermined, but probably electrical.
