Firefighters from Windsor to Kingston were called to battle a stubborn barn fire in Lakeville Monday afternoon.
The call came in to the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department at 1:35 p.m. indicating a barn fire at the home of Charles Keddy, North Bishop Road, Lakeville.
In fact, two barns containing hay were fully involved by the time firefighters arrived on the scene. An unconfirmed report said a large boom preceded the blaze, which erupted in a fireball and quickly consumed the two structures.
Firefighters were hampered by winds of 31 km/h that gusted to 50 km/h as of 3:44 p.m. Monday. Crews worked hard to divert the blaze from a house that sits on the eastern end of the property and fought their way through twisted metal and debris to extinguish the fire.
Kentville Volunteer Fire Department spokesman Deputy Fire Chief Steve Leslie said, “there were two barns full of hay and the wind is definitely killing us right now. He also said that numerous departments up and down the Valley were standing-in as well to aid in the cooperative effort.
As of 4 p.m., crews were still onsite working to extinguish the fire. Leslie said there were no injuries at the time he spoke with us.
