Martha Little explores meaning of word asylum
A new exhibit has opened at ARTsPLACE Gallery Sunday and it will be gracing the Annapolis Royal venue until November 26.

Committed Beyond Reason is an exhibition designed by Martha Little "to explore the opposing meanings of the word asylum and to use household objects, or fragments thereof, as vehicles of poetic expression."

Little says: "By placing these multidimensional words (in combination with equally resonant images) into jarring, mysterious, or unusual found object contexts, I hope to deepen meaning further, thereby converting these ordinary domestic objects into symbols."

Little incorporates redrawing of "the great masters" of western European history as well as images the Prinzhorn collection.

Hans Prinzhorn (1866-1933) was a German psychiatrist and art historian, who between 1918-1921 assembled approximately 5,000 works created by residents of asylums across Europe.

Gallery hours: Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m.
