Needless controversy when a park is clearly needed
To the Editor:

We would like to commend the Town of Kentville for taking a stand to develop the pocket park in Bonavista Estates. Since this motion was passed, the Mayor and supporting councillors have faced angry opposition from a few opponents and an attempt from Councillor Nola Folker-Hill to delay park development. We appreciate that the majority of Council is not being swayed by this effort.

We cannot believe that the development of a small park with limited spaces for seating and a small play structure can result in such controversy, especially since the land was designated for public purposes (such as a park or playground as dictated in the Town’s By-law) approximately 15 years ago. Everyone building or buying a property backing this green space would, responsibly, know that this space was designated for public use. It’s very perplexing that the development of a small park would be controversial in a growing neighborhood where currently 60 children live. Most folks would agree that establishing a safe, accessible space for children to gather and play is a necessity to a community this size.

There is plenty of evidence to demonstrate that neighborhoods should have accessible space designated for public and/or recreational purposes because it reduces isolation (often experienced by new families, new moms, caregivers and seniors); supports positive recreational opportunities for children; and strengthens and builds community relationships.

The Municipal Government Act (provincial legislation governing all municipalities) promotes designating funds and/or land in subdivisions for the purposes of public use such as a park or playground.

We’re shocked and saddened that a few of our neighbours would use tactics (such as distributing inaccurate information that has caused some residents unnecessary fear and concern) to discredit the development of the park/play area. This approach serves only to divide us at a time when the community should be coming together to design a park/play area.

It’s the desire of the supporters of the park to design an area that preserves trees and vegetation, addresses the privacy concerns of the homeowners bordering this land, and is esthetically suited to this subdivision. This park will be an asset to this community.

Again, thank-you to the Mayor, supportive councillors and members of the Parks and Recreation Committee for your support in moving this long overdue project forward. Kentville was recently rated #1 for “livability in Nova Scotia. Certainly a town rated #1 is a town that will support families to have a safe accessible place for their children to gather and play.

Thank-you for the opportunity
