It was a slow start for the Barrington Visitor Information Centre this spring with counts down in May and June. July and August showed an increase but the fall was a different story.
“In September we experienced a decline of nearly 50 per cent over last year,” said manager Diane Smith.

The centre closed on Sept. 26 because of the weak numbers. In 2007 it closed around the third week in October.

A total of 3,473 visitors stopped at the centre this year compared to 3,988 for 2007.

“This was a decrease of 13 per cent over last year, mainly due to fewer U.S. visitors,” said Smith.

She says most visitors were interested in activities like boating, fishing, tours, as well as crafts and specialty shops.

“We are still getting some really good comments and positive feedback from our visitors, especially about the scenery and they just can’t say enough about the hospitality shown in this area,” she said.

Visitors often expressed inquiries about the possibility of fishing tours and a desire to visit Cape Sable.

“At least half or more of them asked, if I were to come back, or if I were to stay, are there tours? Are there places I can browse in the evening? Is there somewhere I can take a cruise to see seals?” said Smith.

For the month of July, visits to Nova Scotia dropped 13 per cent compared to July 2007.

To the end of July there were 39,000 fewer visitors to the province, which is about three per cent less than last year.
