Firefighters respond to cottage blaze in Baxter's Harbour

The deputy chief of the Canning Fire Department said you could see the glow in the sky when firefighters arrived at the scene of a cottage fire in Baxter’s Harbour Wednesday evening.

Scott Cruickshank said the call about the structure fire on the Black Hole Road came in at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. Due to the remote location of the cottage, firefighters had to lay a lot of hose line by hand.

“It was pretty much destroyed when we got on the scene,” Cruickshank said. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the RCMP and the provincial Fire Marshal’s Office.

Hall’s Harbour Fire Chief David Watson said his department responded in mutual aid, sending a tanker to the scene. Kentville Fire Chief Shawn Ripley his department sent a pumper to stand by.

Meanwhile, Ripley said Kentville firefighters responded to the scene of a head-on collision involving a log truck and a half-ton truck on Highway 12 in Forest Home at around 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening, Oct. 4.

The driver of the log truck fled the scene. The “Jaws of Life” had to be utilized to extricate the driver of the half-ton, who incurred minor injuries in the collision. Local firefighters from Wolfville and New Minas involved in the Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Team responded to the scene to help with a fluid spill.

Kentville responded to a medical emergency behind the fire hall Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Kentville firefighters responded following an incident with fuse on a high voltage power pole on Cornwallis Street Wednesday evening, Oct. 8.

Kentville responded to the seniors’ complex on Oakdene Avenue to investigate a problem with the elevator soon thereafter. Ripley said the problem resulted from the power outage.

Kentville firefighters responded to a false fire alarm sounding in an apartment on Oakdene Avenue Wednesday evening, Oct. 8.

Kentville responded again to the seniors’ complex on Oakdene Avenue Wednesday evening, Oct. 8, this time to a false fire alarm triggered when the power came back on.

Kentville responded to a dryer fire at a home on Cornwallis Crescent in Coldbrook Thursday evening, Oct. 9. Ripley said there was some minor smoke damage.

Wolfville Fire Chief Tim MacLeod said his department responded to a call for medical assistance in Wolfville Saturday night, Oct. 4.
