Symphony Nova Scotia bringing program to Yarmouth area schools
Symphony Nova Scotia takes to the road this fall to perform for thousands of students across Nova Scotia. In partnership with Democracy 250 and hip-hop/R&B artist Jordan Croucher, the orchestra will visit several schools including Yarmouth and Par-en-bas Nov. 13.
Sponsored by Democracy 250, and conducted by Symphony Nova Scotia's resident conductor Martin MacDonald, these concerts introduce young audiences to the diversity of orchestral music with works from many times and cultures as well as four joint numbers with Democracy 250 youth ambassador Jordan Croucher.
This special program highlights a theme that is central to music through the ages and important for democracy: the use of art to stand up for your beliefs and make a mark, whether it’s Russian composer Shostakovich in his musical resistance to Stalin, Ka-Nin Chan's fusion of Chinese tradition with contemporary Western symphonic music, or Jordan Croucher's lyrics.
“We’re so pleased that this provincial tour is a part of the Democracy 250 celebration,” says Symphony Nova Scotia’s CEO, Erika Beatty. “It's wonderful to show how democracy brings people together for a greater purpose – just like music does for our orchestra and Jordan Croucher.”
In-school concerts are just part of Symphony Nova Scotia’s comprehensive music education initiatives, along with open rehearsals, school matinees, special workshops, the Adopt-a-Musician program, Musical Munchkins, and the Library Series.
