Safety tips from the Canning Volunteer Fire Department: Check your smoke detector batteries and change if needed, and plan your escape route and outside meeting place in the event of a fire emergency.

The Canning Library winter hours are Tuesdays from 2-5 p.m., Thursdays from 2-5 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Bookmobile arrives at the Lions Hall Tues., Oct. 14 from 7-8 p.m.
A Canning Legion ticket auction will be held Sunday, Oct. 19. Viewing begins at 11 a.m. with the draw at 1 p.m. Canteen available, 50/50 draw. Entrance via access ramp off Main St.

Ross Creek Centre for the Arts: Adults will have the opportunity to work with two of Nova Scotia’s finest fabric artists Oct. 19. Barbara Hill-Taylor and Pat Loucks will help you create your own masterpiece. Loucks takes you through a dying workshop and Taylor provides techniques on artistic quilt-making.
Children’s Visual Art Class: The artist-in-residence, Sojo Truth, will run Sunday afternoon classes for the next 10 weeks until Dec. 7, from 1-3 p.m. Kids 8-11 years old will have the opportunity to explore the world of art in fun and amazing ways and have their creations displayed in the Ross Creek Community Gallery.
Fall Teen Programs: Preparing for art or theatre school or just wanting to take a fabulous art or theatre class? Classes run until Dec. 7. Build your portfolio while receiving guidance to determine which school is right for you while upgrading your skills.

Canning Fire Hall Play Group takes place on Thursdays from 1-2 p.m. All pre-school children and parents and guardians are welcome to attend the programs. Northeast Kings Education Centre: Oct. 16 is a very busy day at the school with the Post-Secondary Day from 12-3 p.m. in the lobby with over 40 representatives from universities and colleges. Booths will be set up where parents and students will have the opportunity to speak to representatives.
There will also be an Oct. 16 early dismissal of 12:15 for Grades 6-12, a home and school meeting at 7 p.m. and a post-secondary day high school dance at 7:30-10:30 p.m.; there will be a middle school dance from 7-9:30 p.m. Oct. 17; a high school dance from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Oct. 18; a middle school student-led conference will be held Oct. 21 from 6:30-8 p.m.; a conference day for teachers and no school for students Oct. 26.
Scholarships available at Student Services include The Loran Awards and application deadline is Oct. 28; the TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership, application deadline Oct. 31; and the Wendy’s Classic Achiever Scholarship application, deadline Nov. 3.
NKEC Senior Girls Soccer team fundraiser: a ticket raffle is being held for a huge assorted gift basket with proceeds from the $1 ticket or three for $2 going toward the “Run For the Cure” fight against breast cancer. Tickets available from any soccer team member.
Sunday Flea Markets: Each Sunday, the Canning Lions Hall opens its doors to sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tables are $5 each. Canteen is available. Wheelchair accessible.

Canning Lions Hall fundraiser: Pick up your tickets now, $2 each or three for $5, at the Canning Sunday flea market or from any Lions club member for the chance to win a remote electric fireplace with a Riverview stone insert with 4250 B.T.U. that heats 400 square feet. Draw will be held Dec. 21, just in time to hang your stockings.
Canning Lions Hall ”Big Trip Night” will be held Nov. 8 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Admission is $45 per couple and includes a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings at 7 p.m., dance and sounds of “Bandits” at 9 p.m., with door prizes throughout the evening, and a chance to win the grand prize of a $2,500 voucher from Maritime Travel or $2,000 cash or one of the secondary prizes of a “Mystery Gift.”

The Four-Churches bazaar and luncheon will be held at the Canning Lions Hall Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Menu consists of fish chowder, chicken vegetable and squash soups, rolls, tea biscuits and beverages, as well as an assortment of desserts. Admission is $8 for the luncheon or $2 for the bazaar.
