'No backpack' rule prompts West Kings walkout

A group of students walked out of West Kings and off the school property October 3 to protest a backpack policy now being enforced.

The issue of students carrying backpacks first surfaced at West Kings several years ago, when students were told they had to leave their backbacks in lockers and could not carry them to class. Since then, the rules have been relaxed but, when students came back to class this September, they were informed the “no backpack” rule would be strictly enforced, starting in October.

About 70 students, all of whom thought the ruling unfair, walked out of classes as a show of opposition to the policy. School administrators were kept busy throughout the school day monitoring the students’ demonstration, which took place on the south side of Highway 1, across from the school. RCMP were called in midday to help control the crowd.

AVRSB’s superintendent of schools Norman Dray reported two students were suspended for defiance of authority as a result. The school principal was planning to meet with students who still wanted to discuss the issue October 6.

“The students were encouraged to bring their concerns forward,” said Dray, who added the walkout came as a surprise to the administration.

“There was no warning given that students intended to take any action.”

Dray said the school’s decision to ban backbacks from the halls and classrooms addresses security issues.

“Backpacks are cumbersome items and, when they are lying around, they impede safe access to classroom and hallway exits.”

He confirmed the fire marshall’s office agreed banning the items from halls and classrooms would improve safety in the school. He added the policy also addresses other safety and security issues.

“Frankly, we don’t know what is inside a student’s knapsack. There could be prohibited items or substances.”

Dray said the West Kings administration “thought this out carefully” by engaging the student’s council in the process and by giving students plenty of time to prepare for the policy change.

“With the (school) renovation now complete, there is no need for students to be hauling their

backpacks around. Personally, I don’t think it is a hardship for them to go back and forth to lockers throughout the day,” said Dray. He said, most importantly, the administration has taken appropriate action to create a safe and secure environment for all students.

“Principals and administrators are well within their rights do what they need to do to maintain good order within a school.

“Keeping the kids safe is what it is all about.”

On the day of the walkout I chose to stay inside. This is not saying that I agree with the no backpack rule. When I go to class I am generally carrying 2 binders, 1 or 2 textbooks, my pencil case, a novel and whatever else may be required or certain classes. When I get to class all of these things (save a binder) go on the floor. If I was in a rush to get out of the class, say in case of fire, I think that I would be more likely to see a backpack blocking my way than a slippery binder. Also if I was walking in the hall and the fire alarm went I would drop my things and run. Isn't that just as dangerous?
To address the issue of "prohibited" substances. I have never witnessed and such thing in my classes.
I do think that the students protesting should come up with a new way to protest. Sure, walkouts have worked before, but that in itself is the problem.....Be creative come up with something new and shockingly different.
If you want to make a difference do something different.

I find it just insane that we are not allowed to have our backpacks...the main reason I was in the walkout was because one of my close friends was not able to get into her locker and ended up getting locked out of her house and barely was able to get in to her house; the only reason she was able to get in was that her older sister showed up and let her in.
The other reason was that some people can't hold all the books they need in their hands and we find it more convenient to carry our books in our backpacks.

Are you kidding? That's like saying kids can't wear black because it represents EVIL! Oh, or is there a bomb or gun in that backpack! Get off the fear-mongering and teach these students something that may benefit their future, then send them home to do a real assignment... like watch some more TV. With foolish rules like this you should expect non-compliance. You must all be insane!

Even though I was at the first walkout I don't see why there's going to be another one because the principal even said that if it happens again then everyone will be suspended and what makes people think that more people are going to come to this one because more than likely less people will come.

I agree with Kegan; going to our lockers will make us late for class and I know I seem like a goody-goody and all, but I've seen my share of detentions and there are better things to do than put students in detention for being late for class all because they were doing what they were supposed to.
