Southwestern N.S. wharfs not impacted by Kyle

Fishermen at wharfs around southwestern Nova Scotia took precautions to tie up their boats and kept checking their lines when word came that hurricane Kyle would be coming ashore in southwestern N.S. late Sunday evening, Sept. 28.

Those efforts paid off in Yarmouth and Shelburne counties as there were no reports the following morning of any significant damage in the region, particularly in Shelburne County which seemed to get the worst of Kyle before it diminished to a tropical storm. Some fishermen credited the lack of damage to the direction the wind was blowing in.

Kyle came ashore as a marginal category one hurricane, with gusts of 120 km/h. There was a report of a boat in trouble in the Shelburne harbour. It was a Cooke Aquaculture vessel (salmon farm work boat). The Shelburne harbour master said pumps were brought in and the vessel was saved. The Shelburne wharf was also a busy spot as lots of draggers and other fishing vessels came in to weather out the storm.
