White Rock news
by Pam Schofield (pamschofield@auracom.com)
Hello, everyone. Have you put away your shorts and taken out the sweaters yet? I know there have been a few mornings that have been a little bit chilly, to say the least. I think the Indian summer we usually get in September got lost somewhere. Yeah, it has stopped raining so much, but there hasn’t been much for warm weather.

The White Rock Community meeting took place Sept. 24. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend as planned so I will have to get the scoop on the latest happenings and let you know next week.

I did receive an e-mail from Audrey Haig-Stewart. She is running for County Council in District 10 and is interested in hearing from the community members. She was going to try to attend the meeting so I will check with someone and see if she was able to and find out more for you.

Elections. For me, it’s hard to know who to vote for. The local people that are running for Council and MLAs very seldom get to talk to the everyday people. There is probably only a handful of community members, if that, who know what each of these people represent.

The federal election is usually all about one person insulting another, which reminds me a lot of children bickering over a toy. My co-worker’s son wrote an assignment for school about the election and I think he was right. For the most part, it’s a joke. I think the local election needs to be promoted more: when is it, what district is where and so on. As for the federal election, why can’t they act like adults for a while?

The card party for Sept. 23 brought another huge turnout with 12 tables in attendance. The women’s first prize went to Hazel Boylen. Deanna Schofield won women’s second and Geraldine Cross won women’s third.

The men’s first prize went to Clyde Vaughan. Dick Weir won men’s second and Darren Hutchinson won men’s third.

The 50/50 prize went to Geraldine Cross and Mary Coldwell won the traveler prize. Bruce Long won the door prize. Doreen Arnburg donated the prizes for the evening. There is one more week of cards on Tuesday nights in Black River. Starting Oct. 7, the card parties will take place at the White Rock Community Hall. Let’s continue the great turnout in the new location.

It is great to hear that Dick Weir is feeling better. Best wishes to everyone celebrating a special day.

I see there is a for-sale sign on the house formerly owned by Nate Levy. I wonder when and who we will be welcoming to the community. Also, the old Smith house is still for sale. There are lots of changes.

There will be a Rummage Sale at the White Rock Baptist Church Friday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds for the White Rock Baptist Church. All donations gratefully accepted. For further information call 542-5478.

Hockey camp in Canning begins Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. There are different time slots depending on what age level your child is in. Come out and support the kids.

There will be a Community Yard Sale Oct. 11th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the White Rock Community Hall. If you would like to book a table or for more information, contact Viola Pick at 542-5478. Everyone is welcome. Remember; one person's junk is another person's treasure.

I think that’s all for now. If I have forgotten something, I am sorry. Just remind me and I will put it in the following week. For now, have a great week; stay warm, safe and happy.
