He was by no means the favourite going into the match, but up-and-coming Maritime pro wrestling star Titus pulled off what could be considered a huge upset at the historic Berwick Arena last Saturday night.

Titus, a national TV star on The Fight Network’s Wrestling Reality, was facing Brody Steele, also a national TV star on TFN’s WR and an international pro wrestling superstar, in the main event.

Steele, who stands 6’8” and weighs 325 pounds, physically dominated most of the match, but got caught on the top turnbuckle by Titus, who executed a 360-degree flip on Steele out of a head scissors. The move, known as a top-rope “Frankensteiner” or “hurricanrana”, left the crowd stunned. Titus made the cover and scored the pin.

In a backstage interview following the match, Steele said he lost the match to a wrestler who hasn’t traveled as much in his entire career as Steele travels in a good week. He said Titus would learn a lesson the next time they cross paths.

“This isn’t a one-off,” Steele said. “If he thinks there’s another super-heavyweight in the Maritimes, he has another thing coming.”

Titus said he came to Berwick ready to face the greatest challenge of his life and hopefully walk away with just a little more experience and ability.

“In the end, man, it was a crazy upset,” he said. “I lucked out, hit him with my top rope hurricanrana and put him down for the one-two-three. Hopefully we cross paths in the future again.”

Another surprising turn

In another surprising turn of events, Tristan Strife nearly pulled off an upset win over five-time MSW Atlantic Canadian Champion “X-Ray” Kyle Kruze for the title. Strife left the ring and grabbed the bell from the timekeeper and the championship belt. Referee Kenny Flint took the bell away, but didn’t see the belt, which Strife was concealing behind his back.

As Flint returned the bell to the timekeeper’s table, Strife took the opportunity to hit Kruze over the head with the belt. Flint counted the pin and awarded the championship to Strife.

However, commissioner Chuck Martin witnessed what happened and informed the referee, who overturned the original decision and restarted the match. Kruze recuperated and scored a quick three-count on Strife to retain the championship.

In other action, “Lumber” Jack Johnson defeated “Commercial Free” Sexton Phoenix. In a tag-team contest, Chris Cook and Riddick Stone defeated The Rebel and “Hard-Nosed” Haggerty. “Mean” Mickey McFinnigan defeated Alexander Saint.
