A new fire station, new equipment, and course attendance were on the agenda at the semi-annual meeting of fire departments with the Municipality of Barrington on Sept. 11.
The Wood’s Harbour Volunteer Fire Department moved into their new station earlier this month. The department has received 40 calls since the start of the year. Thirty of the calls were EMS related. Ten firefighters attended a traffic control course held in January and a strategy tactics course is scheduled for Sept. 20/21 as well as a safety officers course for Oct. 4/5.

Two teams entered the West Hants vehicle extrication and learning symposium held in Windsor.

Dwayne Hunt of the Island & Barrington Passage Volunteer Fire Department informed council that 62 calls had been received to date: 48 were in the Municipality of Barrington and 14 were in the Town of Clark’s Harbour. To date members have logged 1,938 hours responding to calls, regular meetings, local maintenance and practices. Membership currently stands at 62 with four on the waiting list. The department has purchased 30 new sets of turn out gear, six pagers, with six more on order, and hoses and nozzles for the pumper truck.

A team from the department participated in the Atlantic Extrication Challenge in Windsor, and placed fifth overall out of 13 teams.

The 36-member Shag Harbour/Bear Point Volunteer Fire Department received 41 calls from Jan.1 to Aug. 31. Major purchases included: 600 feet of hose and nozzle, six pairs of coveralls, three icom radios and two motorolla pagers.

Eugene Stoddard, president of the Island & Barrington Passage Volunteer Fire Department, questioned the progress being made on dry hydrants and council promised an update. A water hole on Brass Hill across from the treatment plant will also b e receiving repairs.

Arrangements are being made for some fire department members to receive HazMat training through the Valley.

The Barrington, and Port Latour volunteer fire departments were unable to print their reports due to problems with their Fire King programs.
