Clam industry needs provincial, federal assist—MLA
Nova Scotia’s government needs to work with the federal government to solve the clamming crisis in the Annapolis Basin, says Digby-Annapolis MLA Harold Theriault.
“It seems as though there is no real plan here to solve the pollution concerns in the event of heavy rains,” the Liberal fisheries critic said in a news release.

“Where is the response from government? They’ve known that a crisis has been looming here for months and have done nothing.”

Theriault said a recent change in rules from the United States is causing immediate closures of beaches and has had a severe impact on those who rely on the clamming industry.

If the closure is due to problems with sewage systems in the area, then those problems need to be fixed, said Theriault.

“Both federal and provincial governments must stand up for this vital industry. Shouldn’t we be prepared for something as frequent as rain in Nova Scotia? We simply cannot just blame it on the rain,” he said.

The MLA said many clam harvesters have already lost more than half their year’s income.

“The clamming industry in this region is worth $9 million a year. With half of that revenue already lost, the economic impact here is disastrous. Spend the money necessary to solve this sewage problem immediately.”

Julius, what are you talking about?
There is only one party. What's with the Alliance crap?
If you read my previous entry, you would clearly see the problem.
How are they hijacking your vote?
Please get that tunnel vision chacked!

I think the problem is not with the Liberals, but with the fact that we have a Liberal MLA and MP. The problem is that if you don't vote with the Tories and Alliance parties you will not be supported by either government. It disgusts me that the government tries to hijack my vote in this way.

Harold, you are a piece of work!
When I was a lad growing up, this issue was addressed.
Why is this only an issue when the Liberals aren't in control?
All of a sudden it is the rain. It has been raining for years!
Don't blame the U.S., like a typical Liberal.
On the sewage system problem, let me enlighten you.
Back when I was a lad, we contacted the provincial and federal governments about this. And it's still an issue?
Do the names Trudeau and Regan ring a bell with you?
They were the leaders of the day. It also wasn't an issue for Joe Casey either.
So, what is the problem here Harold, the rain, the sewage, the U.S., or Liberals who won't admit there failures?
You might fool some, but you won't fool all. Now go stand in front of a mirror so you can see the real problem!
