CAPRE attracts international visitors: New Zealand visitor Lawrence Chok contacted CAPRE (Canning Area Parents for Real Employment) directors in the spring, informing them that CAPRE was famous in New Zealand.
Chok was in Canning to research entrepreneurial options for his own son and here on behalf of a parent-run organization in Palmerston, New Zealand. The New Zealand group is one of many that has traveled to Canning to see how CAPRE works with families and individuals to provide individualized programs for people with intellectual disabilities.
The connection between CAPRE and New Zealand traces back to international consultant Michael Kendrick who, in his world travels, cites CAPRE as a model example of successful development with individualized plans for self-employment with individuals with significant needs.
Judy Van Amerongen, who is one of the founding mothers of CAPRE, was invited to speak in Australia and New Zealand in 2004. She sparked international interest in CAPRE while “down under.”
Representatives from eight organizations and four countries have visited and CAPRE has been invited to speak at provincial, national and international conferences as well as with local and regional groups and individuals interested in exploring entrepreneurship as an option for supported employment. Sharing over 20 years of experience and knowledge is part of CAPRE’s mandate.
Peter Campbell, a CEO of Brackenridge Estates, and Ann Campbell, an early childhood specialist, visited Canning from Sept. 3-7 to explore how CAPRE operates. Anne enjoyed visiting Early Childhood Intervention, Apple Tree Landing and the Alexander Society.
Peter has been transforming his organization from a residential group home care development to a preferred model where individuals are supported in independent living situations with individualized work and training.

Campbell, a Wilf Carter fan, was born and raised into a musical family in Long Reach, N.B. and at a young age showed interests in guitar and piano. She moved to Riverview in 1964 with her husband and family. Fiddle lessons began with Ivan Hicks in 1989 and shortly after she joined the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers.
She taught herself yodeling three years ago by listening to Wilf Carter and Patsy Montana. Accomplishments included solo performances on a fiddle show, jamborees, county fairs, national conventions and concerts, parties, seniors’ homes, church services and benefits, and she has received radio and television interviews and traveled extensively with the fiddlers.
Wilf Carter Music Night also features Carl Dalrymple, Caroll Edwards, Dave Harnett and Fred Shaw. Tickets are $10 each, available at the door and from Cochrane’s Pharmacy in Canning and Wolfville.
