No criminal charges will be laid following an accident at a Somerset-area farm Tuesday in which a four-year-old boy was injured.

Corporal Dan Dionne of the Kingston RCMP said the detachment became involved after learning about the incident, which occurred Sept. 16 around the noon-hour.

“A call was not made to 911 so police weren’t engaged in the initial emergency process,” Dionne said, “but after getting some information we went to the farm to conduct an investigation.”

Directly after the accident the child was taken by family members from the farm, located north of Berwick, to the Western Kings Memorial Health Centre in Berwick, where they were met by an ambulance that transferred him to Kentville. The boy was stabilized and subsequently transported by air ambulance to the IWK suffering from head injuries.

Police interviewed people and family members at the farm site the following day, learning the boy had been hit by a piece of metal. Dionne confirmed the boy was suffering from head trauma, but was unable to comment on the extent of his injuries or any change in his condition since the accident. He is still a patient at the IWK.

“We determined the injury resulted from an unfortunate freak accident and there was no criminal intent,” Dionne noted. He said details of the RCMP investigation have been turned over to the provincial Occupational Health and Safety office for review.
