Walk-in clinic is coming, but not for everyone
The subject of a walk-in clinic for Yarmouth made the rounds at the town council table during last week's regular meeting.

During the meeting councillor Wally Strickland asked about the possibility of such a facility for Yarmouth. Councillor Clifford Hood, who sits on the committee that works to attract doctors to the area, said plans are in place for a walk-in clinic at the Main Street medical practice. However that walk-in clinic would only be for the patients of the doctors who work at that facility.

Hood said that when the service is in place, it is believed that it should be enough to reduce the number of people presenting to out patients at the hospital on a daily basis. Hood said the service would go into operation once the Main Street facility is fully staffed with seven doctors. There are four doctors at the location at the moment. Although he was unsure of when there would be a full compliment of doctors on Main Street, Hood said they are working to fill the slots as soon as possible.

During the discussion, council heard that an actual walk-in clinic is something that would have to be driven by a doctor wanting to open a private enterprise and in many cases it is not seen as the answer to reducing wait times at out patients.

Maybe its just my imagination, but if my memory is correct, when this clinic was first announced it was supposed to be a walk-in clinic period. It was not supposed to be created just so certain doctors could get out of the hospital confines. Remember that even the Minister of Health was fooled somewhat over the whole fiasco when asked about it.
I believe there was some type of deception going on or at least not enough honest information was given out to the general public. However this really shouldn't surprise anyone should it?

But the thing is, it wuold in a way reduce the wait at outpatients in the sense that sooo many people in Yarmouth don't have family doctors, and if we had a walk-in clinic for anybody, than those people seeking just a new prescription or something little would be able to go to the walk-in clinic instead of taking up time at outpatients for those who need it more.

I do not understand why people who have a doctor need to have a walk-in clinic. With all the people in this area who do not have a family doctor that would seem to me to be the first priority. Establish a clinic for those people. If you have a doctor you can make an appointment but those without suffer at outpatients. Stop focusing on those that have and help those that have not. WAKE UP. Wait times at the hospital are long because there are so many people without a doctor. Get a clinic for them.
