The Northeast Kings Titans are still looking for their first win of the NSSAF football league season - at least they are getting closer.

The Titans and Cole Harbour Cavaliers played to a 14-14 tie in NKEC’s home opener Sept. 13 in Canning.

Co-head coach Wally Archer confirmed it was “a much better game,” especially for the NKEC offense, than the Titans’ season-opening 22-0 loss to CEC in Truro.

Logan Van Blarcom passed for 101 yards and Roland Provencal had six pass receptions for 75 yards and scored both NKEC touchdowns.

“The running backs played hard,” Archer said. “We can definitely see improvement, and will continue to get better.”

The Titans’ defense put constant pressure on the Cole Harbour offense, recording five sacks and recovering a pair of fumbles. Isaac Ueffing had nine solo and seven assisted tackles. Mike Livingstone had eight tackles.

“We played well enough to win,” Archer said, “but we are content with the outcome as we saw some very good signs for the future.”

Horton spoiled the Central Kings home opener (both teams play their home games on Raymond Field) with a 14-6 win Sept. 13 on the Acadia turf.

Scott Duncan and J.R. Murphy caught touchdown passes for Horton (1-1), which according to head coach Alec Hyndman, “played better in the first half” against a C.K. squad he feels “is better than we were at this point last year.”

Brett Hines ran an interception back 65 yards for the only points for the 1-1 Gators.

Hyndman was very pleased with the performance of the Horton defense, which, as he pointed out, “has yet to allow a point this season” in its first two games (all nine points the Griffins have allowed have come on special teams).

Dougie Gee, who kicked both converts for the Griffins, had a huge game on defense, recording six tackles, two sacks and forcing four fumbles.

David Bermudez, an exchange student from Mexico, had nine tackles on defense and special teams, one sack and forced one fumble.

Hundman felt Horton’s team speed was the difference in a competitive game: Horton had 106 passing yards and 114 rushing yards.

In Windsor, Avon View lost 14-9 to J.L. Ilsley, which held the Avalanche on the goal line in the final three minutes to preserve the win. Quarterback Nick Pettipas had Avon View’s only touchdown, and Jake Galbraith added a field goal.
