Lake Pisiquid was closed to the public last week after it was discovered there were high levels of e-coli in the water.
Windsor Public Works director Don Beatty said the bacteria were discovered during a routine check. “During the summer months we test the water on a weekly basis as a precaution.”
The high bacteria count could be caused by a number of factors he said, but that heavy rain increases risk of contamination. “When there is a lot of rain it can cause the sewer system to overflow resulting in leakage into the lake.” He noted as well, that rainfall run-off from agriculture fields can impact bacteria levels.
Although the situation usually resolves itself in a matter of days another sample was taken Sept. 12 and the town is waiting on those results before re-opening the lake.
Because the bacteria was detected right way he said there would have been no risk to the public.
In the meantime, signs are posted along the beach to warn people of the risks. The department has issued a Beach Water warning. Beatty noted the town is asking people to refrain from entering the water until the all clear has been given.
