Runs continue Terry Fox’s ‘marathon of hope’

Registration for the Digby event begins at 12:30 at the Heritage Centre. Participants can choose to complete routes measuring either five or 10 kilometres.

“It’s a family event,” says organizer Megan Moore. “There will be people of all ages, and probably a few dogs as well.”

At Sandy Cove, registration is at 12:30 p.m. at Digby Neck Consolidated School, and the run is at 1 p.m. There is also a special triathlon at 11:15 am.

Bear River’s registration is at the fire hall, with a run from 1 to 3 p.m.

In Clare, the run is from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and begins at the CIFA Building.

Clementsvale also holds its run at the same time, starting at Forrester's Hall.

In Weymouth, the run is from 2 to 4 p.m., and begins at the Foodland store.

Terry Fox ‘stood up to cancer’ in 1980 when he began his run across Canada. The goal of the 21-year old, who had lost a leg to cancer three years earlier, was to raise $1 for every Canadian—$24.5 million.

At the time, it seemed like an impossible dream that a man with one leg could run the equivalent of a marathon a day.

Fox, whose run was halted 5,373 kilometres later when his cancer returned, died at the age of 22 in June, 1981. That same year, Canadians continued his ‘Marathon of Hope,’ and to date, more than $400 million has been raised in his name for cancer research.

The Terry Fox Run takes place in communities in every Canadian province and territory, and in a total of 32 countries around the world.
