Nova Scotia vacation a dream come true

While working to learn English in Oxford, England, in 2006-07, Noskova became friends with Cheri Kelly of Weymouth North, who was on a working holiday in England. Kelly convinced her new friend that a trip to Nova Scotia would be an unforgettable experience.

“I have spent the last two years travelling to different countries in Europe and North Africa,” said Kelly. “Nova Scotia has its own calling card and I knew Zdenka would have a wonderful time.”

Late this July, Kelly and fellow Maritimer Solange Amirault of Saulnierville met up with Noskova in Prague for the trip back to Nova Scotia.

“I always wanted to visit some place far away from my country,” said Noskova. “When Cheri invited me to Nova Scotia, it sounded like a fantastic opportunity to see the Atlantic Ocean, whales and lighthouses.”

After a whirlwind tour of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, it was all about Nova Scotia, especially Digby County.

“The town of Digby impressed me very much. It’s beautiful and has its own magic. I enjoyed looking at the different boats tied up at the wharf the most.” said Noskova.

“Scallop Days was first on our ‘to do’ list,” said Kelly. “It was fun sharing the excitement of coronation, scallop shucking and watching Zdenka’s reaction to her first taste of scallops.”

Noskova said she was impressed with each of the princesses and how well they spoke before an audience.

“I was curious how the princesses would present themselves in front of an audience without any previous experience,” said Noskova. “I thought their speeches were well done.”

“Having my picture taken with the princesses and the RCMP officers made a wonderful souvenir for me.”

Noskova said she was impressed with the scallop shucking contest and was amazed at the contestants’ speed and skill.

“It was entertaining to watch the men shucking scallops. They moved their bodies back and forth in the rhythm of a fishing boat when it is at sea.”

Once the scallops were shucked, they were barbecued and served with a slice of lemon to those who wished a taste.

“I had to try a scallop because I had never eaten one before, said Noskova. “I was impressed with the taste, it was heavenly good!”

“I loved the enthusiasm of the Highland dancers, the music, their dresses and shoes. The fireworks display Sunday night created a wonderful atmosphere to end the whole festival.”

With the sightings of many humpback whales in the Bay of Fundy, a whale-watching trip was next on the agenda for the visitor and her guide.

“We had gone to Peggy’s Cove and it was so wonderful to sit by the sea and watch the waves crash along the shore,” said Noskova. “But to actually go out on the water in a fishing boat to watch for whales was nothing short of spectacular.”

Even though Noskova was never really interested in motorcycles, the recent Wharf Rat Rally on Labour Day weekend had a big impact on how she viewed bikes.

“After seeing all the bikes, I changed my mind.” said Noskova. “I’ve learned that riding a bike can be very exciting but I also saw how dangerous it could be.”

The Extreme Motocross show was intense and exciting for the young tourist as she watched the stunts performed.

“The motocross accident was scary for me as I saw the whole thing happen but I am glad the stunt rider was not seriously injured.”

To Noskova, the Street Punishment show was the most enjoyable.

“I loved the burnouts!”

All too quickly the dream vacation was over and it was time to fly back home and another year at school.

Noskova expressed her appreciation for her memorable Nova Scotia holiday.

“Spending six weeks in Nova Scotia was a wonderful experience. I loved being here. Everyone made me feel very welcome and I was amazed at the generosity shown me. The hospitality I received will always be remembered.”
