The campaign begins
Peter Van Loan, Conservative house leader in the last Parliament, was in Digby Sept. 10 on a three-day tour of the Maritimes.
Van Loan, who was joined his party’s West Nova candidate Greg Kerr, said he was in town to listen to issues and concerns of the area.

He found that the ferry between Saint John and Digby and this town’s wharf still are near the top of the list.

Mike Gushue, manager of the Annapolis Digby Economic Development Agency, told Van Loan that southwestern Nova Scotia is strategically located close to the northeastern United States. Those states are a market for fish and forestry products, as long as there is transportation infrastructure providing a direct link. The ferry link is also critically important to tourism.

Dean Kenley, owner of the Fundy complex, said Digby was in limbo for 10 years after the wharf was divested.

“Don’t go down the same road with the ferry that we went down with the wharf,” he told Van Loan, adding that it is critically important to the economy of the region that there be a long-term plan for the ferry.

Kerr said the importance of the ferry has been pointed out to him in other towns as he has traveled throughout the region.

Digby Harbour Port Association chair Reg Hazelton told Van Loan that the government’s support has been appreciated, but there remains a lot to do.

“If you look at wharf, you’ll wonder why it’s still standing,” he said.

Hazelton took Kerr and Van Loan for an examination by of the wharf and the work that it needs.

Well, here we go again!
First, quit the whining and rhetoric about the Alliance and Stevie.
You should have your narrow vision checked.
So, you like it when the pork-bellies give hand-outs!
You obviously need to do more homework regarding your arguments.
How were my truthful comments about Digby offensive?
My roots to this town are probably deeper than yours. But that will be another debate!
The fact is, truth hurts. Digby has had a "facelift", but she is still the same old girl.
Did you attend school in Digby? You should have had Mrs. Brown for English. She was awesome and could have helped you!
Your whole commentary was offensive, so I guess your libs did something right!

Dear Politically Correct, I'm not going to get into a lengthy debate with you so consider this my one and only response to you. It really amazes me how you and Stevie seem to only have one line, for three years, you blame everything on the Liberals. In three years thats all I've heard. Locally the Liberals facilitated growth. Before the Conservatives the community benifited from companies such as Shaw Wood and an Irving Forrestry operation to name a couple. Since the Conservatives both have seen major reductions, and not to mention there have been two close calls of the ferry packing up. Not to mention the last Conservative government that closed the forces base in Cornwallis.

I really find it offensive your comments about Digby as well. Maybe you could apoligize if you are going to right back, because I think you characterization is inappropriate, and un-needed, we are all Canadians, I guess maybe as an Alliance member you've forgeten that. I understand that might be hard for you.

Come on Janie, like the libs were holding your hand! Or were they? You're obviously out of touch. You even sound a little hateful to the west. They have been spoon feeding you silently in the background without the same anger. But go ahead and vote the same old way. Digby has never progressed. And you can't blame that on the people you mentioned. So, just one question: can you tell me what the libs have done?

Wow the Alliance party knows where Digby is??? Sorry Mr. van Loan, after three years of neglect, you, Kerr and Harper will not have me voting for the Alliance-Conservatives, theres nothing progressive left about your party...
