Three of the five municipal leaders in Shelburne County have been returned to office by acclamation following nomination day for the Oct. 18 municipal election.

Lockeport Mayor Darian Huskilson and Clark’s Harbour Mayor Leigh Stoddart were both uncontested in their bid to seek reelection.

Warden for the Municipality of Barrington, Louise Halliday, who represents District 2 (Shag Harbour, Bear Point Doctor’s Cove and Atwood’s Brook), was also uncontested.

Also returned to office by acclamation was Barrington councillor George El Jakl, who represents District 1 (Woods Harbour, Charlesville, Forbes Point), and Shelburne municipal councilor Sherman Embrae, who represents District 7 (Lydgate, Allendale, Rockland, Little Harbour, West Middle Sable, Lewis Head, Canada Hill Road, Sable River, East Sable River, Port L’Hebert).

As well, Nick Pippy, Tri-County Regional School Board member for eastern Shelburne County, was uncontested in his bid for another term.

As for the other 29 municipal council seats and the western Shelburne County school board seat, a total of 53 candidates have thrown their hat in the ring.

LOCKEPORT

In Lockeport there are five candidates vying for the four council seats. Incumbents Mike Hupman, Allan Stewart, Howard Roswell and Lonnie Townsend are being challenged by newcomer Errol L. Williams.

CLARK’S HARBOUR

In Clark’s Harbour 11 candidates are in the running for the six council seats. Incumbents Russell Atkinson, Sherrie Atkinson, Irene Baker, David Beaulieu, Cecil Brannen and Matthew Swim being challenged by Bridget Brannen, Marlene A. Smith, and former councillors Rudolph Buster Link, Rex Stoddard and Marlene Atkinson.

SHELBURNE

In Shelburne town, voters will elect both a mayor and a council, with incumbent Mayor P.G. Comeau being challenged by Allan Delaney.

For council, there are eight candidates in the running for the six councillor positions.

Incumbents Tony Mahaney, Elizabeth Acker, Bernie Nickerson are the only three councillors reoffering. They are being challenged by Doug Langley, Karen Harris-Mattatall, Michael Race, Elizabeth Rhuland.An eighth candidate, Rick Davis, had initially offered to run, but subsequently decided to withdraw.

MUNICIPALITY OF SHELBURNE

In the Municipality of Shelburne, 12 candidates are competing for six of the seven council seats.

In District 1 (Port Saxon, Port Clyde, Clyde River, Beaverdam, Northwest Harbour, Northeast Harbour, Round Bay, Ingomar and Atlantic), Beverly Miller and Doris Swaine will be on the ballot. Incumbent Pat Nickerson is not reoffering.

In District 2 (Birchtown, Reids Hill, Churchover, Gunning Cove, Carleton Village, Roseway, Roseway Manor), incumbent Ardith VanBuskirk is being challenged by Carol Ann Mahaney.

In District 3 (Sandy Point, Lake Road, Jordan Ferry, Jordan Bay, Locke’s Island), incumbent Raymond Davis is being contested by Norman Wallet.

In District 4 (Upper Clyde, Lower Ohio, Middle Ohio, Upper Ohio, Welshtown, Middle Clyde Road) incumbent W. Terry McIntryre is being challenged by Cathy Holmes.

In the running for District 5 (Jordan Branch, Jordan Falls, East Jordan, Lake George, Lake John Road, Woodlawn Drive, Enslows Point Road) are incumbent Joe Roscoe and Robert S. Smith.

In District 6 (East Jordan, West Green Harbour, Upper East Green Harbour, East Green Harbour, West Head), Roger Taylor is challenging incumbent Paulette Scott.

MUNICIPALITY OF BARRINGTON

Five of the seven council seats in the Municipality of Barrington are being challenged, with 12 candidates in the running.

In District 3 (Barrington/ Barrington Passage) incumbent Donna Messenger is being challenged by former councillor Clyde Nickerson.

Former MLA Cecil O’Donnell has thrown his hat in the ring for District 4 (Baccaro, Port LaTour, Clyde River) councillor, going up against incumbent Wilford Smith.

In District 5 (North East Point, Clam Point, Stoney Island) incumbent Larry Stewart is being challenged by Shaun Hatfield and former councilor Wayne Smith.

In District 6 (Newellton, Centreville area), incumbent Sean Strang is being challenged by newcomer Rahn O’Connell.

In District 7 (Lower Clark’s Harbour, South Side, The Hawk) incumbent Eddie Nickerson is being challenged by newcomers Cathy Stoddard and Trinda Nickerson.

SCHOOL BOARD

Incumbent school board member for western Shelburne County Robie Atkinson is being challenged by retired teacher Murdoch Forsythe and Andrea Huskilson-Newell.

In the running for the African Nova Scotia school board seat is Michael Alden Fells and Doris Stephenson.
