It has been an eventful summer for Jamie Stuart and Lauren Malloy.
The Youth Conservation Corps members have been busy focusing on projects designed to benefit the environment.

In July, the two took part in orientation for the corps with 50 other young Nova Scotians. They have been working for the past seven weeks in the area and much of what they focused on was promoting active transportation; cycling and walking in the community.

“They really have accomplished quite a bit,” said Lockeport community coordinator Frances Scott. “I think they’ve had a positive influence on lots of people in the area especially toward promoting bicycling and walking.”

Malloy is heading into her second year at Dalhousie University and Stewart is a entering his final year at Lockeport Regional High School.

Besides promoting active transportation the corps members also took part in a clean up of Roods Head Park; an outdoor living course and led a mountain biking expedition.

This was the third Youth Conservation Corps program for the Town of Lockeport in the last four years.

The Corps provides young people with opportunities for hands-on experience in environmental projects like watershed management and climate change.

The Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps began in 1989. Since then, more than 2,000 students gained knowledge and expertise in environmental management and leadership development.
