School is back in session. Local schools Glooscap Elementary and Northeast Kings Education Centre in Canning began classes Sept. 3 and 4. With this in mind, please keep a watchful eye for students walking to and from or getting on or off the school bus.

Glooscap Elementary School: welcomes all new Primary and returning students. Bookmobile arrives for staff and students Thurs., Sept. 11 from 9-9:30 a.m.

Northeast Kings Education Centre welcomes all new and returning students. Bookmobile arrives for staff and students Thurs., Sept. 11 from 9:45-10:15 a.m.

NKEC dress code reminder: Students are reminded that fashion trends do not relinquish them of their responsibility to dress appropriately for school and are reminded that NKEC has a dress code. Please take a few minutes when dressing for school to ask yourself if what you are wearing is appropriate for class.

Dress Code: no low-rider pants revealing undergarments, no bare midriffs, no halters or spaghetti strap tops and no short shorts/skirts (shorts/skirts should fall within 10 cm of the knee) will be permitted.

Clothing with offensive words, slogans or graphics, or clothing or jewelry that promotes sexually suggestive messages, racism, alcohol, drugs or tobacco products are inappropriate for school or school-related events.



The Cornwallis District New Horizon Seniors’ Group will meet each Wednesday from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Lions Hall in Canning beginning Sept. 10. Seniors age 55 and up enjoy an afternoon with a brief business meeting, a lunch and then games like cards, crib and crokinole and an occasional day trip. New members welcome. Annual fee is only $5. Classic Rock Dance: dance to your favourite rock songs with Park Street on the evening of Sat., Sept. 13 at the Canning Lions Hall. Door prizes. Admission is $10 or $15 couple. Proceeds to go to the Atlantic Chapter for Breast Cancer.

Sunday Flea Markets at the Canning Lions Hall: Back by popular demand, the fall flea market will get underway on Sept. 21. Open for sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Tables are $5 each. Canteen is available. Wheelchair accessible. Contact Don at 678-5525 for details.

Canning walkers: Walking in a group is a great way to stay motivated, keep active, have fun and meet new people. There’s no experience necessary to join.

Ross Creek Centre for the Arts gallery: September artist Rachel Ryan tells stories of surreal landscapes using fabric images influenced by the works of Frida Kahlo, Marc Chagall, Gustav Klimt, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Gallery opens Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. Weekends by appointment or chance.

Need blood work? Have your blood drawn by medical laboratory technologist Elaine Eye. Eye will come to your home weekday mornings from 7-10 a.m. Call for an appointment 582-7119.

A blood collection clinic takes place at the Canning Pharmasave Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. at a cost of $6. A free monthly cholesterol and blood pressure clinic is also available. Seniors’ day is the last Thursday of the month.

Kings Early Years Screening for School (KEYSS) is a project offered by the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board in partnership with Valley Child Development Association and supported by the Kings County Children's Foundation that will ease the transition between home and school for both parent and child and build relationships between schools, families and community agencies.

KEYSS is registering children for its free fall clinics now that start the end of September and run until November. If you have a three-year-old child starting school in September 2010 contact project coordinator Mary Cunningham at 678-0097.

Several communities will take part in the Kings North Democracy 250 Celebrations during the month of September. All are welcome to attend.

Scott’s Bay Women’s Institute celebrates with a free afternoon, “Fun Times and BBQ by the Bay” at the Seaside Centre Sun., Sept. 14 beginning at 3 p.m. Children’s games with prizes and a treasure hunt and a celebration cake followed by fireworks, plus much more for everyone.

Baxter’s Harbour Community Association celebrates with a “Flag Raising and Bridge Fest” Sat., Sept. 20 from 1:30–5 p.m. Free admission to the Community Hall grounds with an ice cream bar and BBQ available. Entertainment by Patty’s Session Band. Contact Rick Graham at 582-3951.

Sheffield Mills Community Association celebrates with a “Veterans’ Memorial Dedication” ceremony Sun., Sept 28 beginning at 2 p.m. at the community hall. Contact Jim Taylor at 582-7214.

Village of Canning and Kingsport celebrates with a “Community Picnic in the Park” held at Bruce Spicer’s Park Sun., Sept. 28 from 2-4 p.m. with a BBQ and entertainment. The event will be held at the Canning Lions Hall if raining. Contact Ruth Pearson at 582-3768.
