The monthly Port Williams Secondary Planning Strategy committee meeting was held Aug. 7. The main topic of the meeting was open space and parks.

Municipal planner Ben Sivak presented information on storm surge risks to the waterfront and downtown areas. After discussion, it was thought that after consultation with engineers restrictions should be set up so development would not be permitted on a flood plain.

Sivak did a map exercise with the committee members and asked them to indicate their vision of areas for playgrounds, green spaces areas/parks, parking and walking trails followed by a discussion of their choices. The goals and objectives for the future of the waterfront were discussed.

At the end of the meeting, the nine members of the public present had the opportunity to make comments. The comprehensive meeting notes are on the Port Williams SPS webpage (most easily accessed through the main page of the village website portwilliams.com). They should be read by anyone interested in the subject as they go into detail about the recommendations made.

The next meeting will be held Thurs., Sept. 4 in the conference room at the Village Office. The topic is Land Use Mix and Growth Centre Boundaries. A 30-page document with information about the issue is available online through the SPS webpage as well.

Port Williams playgroup will resume Tues., Sept. 9. Playgroup is open to all caregivers and children from birth to pre-school. Playgroup runs every Tuesday from 10:30-12 at the Baptist Church. It is an unstructured playtime. Snacks are provided.
