Hantsport will host a second annual Paint the Port event to support local art Sept. 13-14.
Chairperson Dan Jamer says a number of artists will be stationed again to work in different areas of the community and people of all ages are invited to watch.
“It’s an opportunity for people to view different artists and different types of artistic mediums,” Jamer said. “It’s an event the whole family can come out and experience.”
The paintings upon which the artists work throughout the day will be added to a gallery being set up at the Churchill House and then auctioned off between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 14.
Most of the money raised from this event goes right back to the local artists, Jamer said.
“And a small amount goes back to the Paint the Port committee for future events.”
This year the committee is also offering two introductory painting workshops for all ages, from 9 a.m. until noon and from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 13, Jamer said. “There is a $5 registration fee, which covers the costs for the workshops and a few art materials.
“The workshop is a new thing,” Jamer said, “geared toward teaching some of the basic fundamentals of art. It’s amazing to see the expression of individuals coming out in art.”
Leisurely activity option
Recreation director Nichole Lutz says there’s more involved in recreation than sporting activities and Paint the Port gives people the option of a more leisurely activity to enjoy.
“It’s also good the event is open to everyone with no real charge,” Lutz said. “It’s bringing more people to Hantsport and I think it’s going to be exciting to see all the artists at work.”
Paint the Port recognizes the financial support of $2,125 received from the provincial government through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage for this event. The partnership helps develop cultural resources for all Nova Scotians.
