Churches of Blomidon Country Open House Tour presented by the Canning Fieldwood Heritage Society and the Canning Interchurch Council Aug. 17 was a huge success. Feedback from the churches has been great, with the general consensus that the tour becomes an annual event with additional time to enjoy the whole experience.

The most frequent commentary was the admiration of the church exteriors and interiors. Signs and balloons drew attention by announcing the tour and welcomed guests to take a peek inside.

Thirteen churches and one lighthouse participated and welcomed approximately six to 64 visitors at each from USA, Newfoundland, Virginia, Illinois and from around the province.

The Borden Wharf Lighthouse ham radio event was also successful. VE1FA/LH talked with 52 other stations, including seven other lighthouses in the USA and Canada. They talked also to Switzerland, Portugal and the Canary Islands during the event.

The Heritage Centre is now closed for the season.

Debbie Chute, summer student for the Fieldwood Heritage Society, also had a great summer.

“Well, I always seem to have a knack for finding jobs where I get paid for not doing a lot of work, and this was definitely one of those jobs. Even with the Churches of Blomidon Country Open House Tour giving me work, there were many days where all I seemed to do was read and wait for tourists to come by,” she said.

“Most of the summer it was very hot and humid, even with the two air conditioners going. On those days I took refuge in the library, visiting with the summer student who works there.

“I have to say that I enjoyed working here, despite the heat and the bugs (although the wasps are now all gone). I enjoyed learning about the local history and meeting the few tourists who stopped by. I enjoyed being upstairs by myself, where I was responsible for making sure the work got done.

“I thank Mrs. Wilma Gibson and the rest of the Fieldwood Heritage Society volunteer staff for giving me the opportunity of working here this summer. I’ll remember it for a long time to come. Oh, and whenever you get a chance, stop by and give next year’s summer student something to do and visit this lovely little museum.”
