Waiting for affordable housing in Liverpool
Federal, provincial and municipal representatives gathered inside Region of Queens’ council chambers Nov. 8, 2005 to announce $2.1-million in rental housing will be constructed under the Canada-Nova Scotia Affordable Housing Agreement.
Developer Ken Anthony quickly constructed his six units above the expected The Bargain! Shop (former Saan) store.

Parsons Investments Ltd., however, has yet to start building its 24 units near the town well area. There was a delay when most of the proposed tenants couldn’t, due to various reasons including age, live on the second floor. The project was re-designed.

Raymond Parsons, President, said, via another employee, ’It is still going ahead and will probably go ahead this fall.’

The busy business man didn’t have time for a direct interview.

Provincial Department of Community Affairs Communications Advisor, Kristen Tynes also said, “The project is going ahead. The first building, which is six units, should be completed by the end of the year.”

She said questions about the reason for the delay and timeline for the balance of the project should be referred to Parsons who, as stated above, wasn’t available for further comment.

At the time of the announcement, it was stated Parsons Investments Ltd. is providing 20 per cent of the development’s cost, which will be completed in three phases from spring 2006 to spring 2007.

The federal government is providing the balance of the capital funding while the provincial government is providing rent supplement funding. This allows tenants to pay no higher than 30 per cent of their salary towards rent.
