In sports, the Weymouth Pontiacs had advanced to the Nova Scotia intermediate B baseball provincials, thanks to a 22-strikeout, two-hitter pitched by Yarmouth’s Keith Bridgeo against Bridgewater. (Bridgeo had fanned 18 batters in a game the previous week.)

35 YEARS AGO

Yarmouth would be getting a new mayor, Fred Emin having announced he was stepping down after serving five terms in the position. Deputy-Mayor Jack Trask and town councillor Bill Mooney were to run for mayor in the upcoming civic election, The Vanguard noted in its Aug. 22, 1973 edition.

The word from Air Canada was that the Viscount airplane was returning to Yarmouth to fill in for the DC-9 jets but just temporarily. “This is due to a shortage of aircraft,” the paper reported. “Yarmouth is to have its present DC-9 service restored as soon as possible.”

30 YEARS AGO

Yarmouth County’s new junior high school – Maple Grove Education Centre – was scheduled to open for the upcoming academic year, but it looked as if it wouldn’t be ready as soon as originally expected because of construction delays.

A petition was being circulated and was to be presented to town council opposing the demolition of the old central fire station.

25 YEARS AGO

Air Canada was planning to discontinue direct flights between Yarmouth and Halifax. The change, scheduled to take effect Oct. 30, would mean the airline’s Halifax-bound flight from Yarmouth would make a stop in Saint John before proceeding to the Nova Scotia capital.

The Town of Yarmouth’s parking commission was looking to deactivate parking meters in the downtown district. Parking meters had been part of downtown Yarmouth for over 30 years, The Vanguard noted in its Aug. 24, 1983 edition.

20 YEARS AGO

A long, sustained period of foggy weather had finally broken. Said one local campground operator (interviewed for a story in The Vanguard’s Aug. 23, 1988 edition), “It’s definitely been the worst summer for fog since we’ve been in the business.” Said the owner of a landscaping business, “This is the worst year I’ve ever seen.” On a positive note, it was pointed out that the fog at least had given tourists a break from the hot weather back home in the U.S. or other parts of Canada. With this in mind, one of those interviewed suggested a marketing slogan for the local area: “Come to Yarmouth. We’re cool.”

15 YEARS AGO

An episcopal ordination ceremony for James M. Wingle – recently named the next bishop of the Diocese of Yarmouth – was held at the Saint Bernard church. On the same day at Saint Ambrose Cathedral he was officially installed as the Yarmouth diocese’s third bishop. He succeeded Most Rev. Austin Burke, who was now the archbishop of Halifax.
