Bridging Liverpool problem with money
Due to rising steel prices, the Region of Queens Municipality’s budget to replace the outer rail of the Liverpool Town Bridge will increase.
“The cost of steel has risen so dramatically we now have to budget an additional $27,700,” said Region of Queens Mayor John Leefe at council’s regular monthly meeting Aug. 18.
The project will be cost shared with the province.
Region of Queens Municipality Director of Engineering and Works, Brad Rowter will evaluate whether they will be able to make the walkways wider in terms of vehicle traffic and regulatory requirements.
The work on the sidewalk will not be easy, noted Mayor Leefe.
“Just under the surface of the sidewalk there is fibre optic cable, so we can’t move the sidewalk and put a new one in, we have to cap the existing sidewalk,” he explained.
In 2007 the original budget for the project was $82,300. The new budget for the project is set at $110,000.
Money from the Region of Queens’ general operating surplus will fund the extra $27,700.
“Work on the railings will be undertaken in October,” said Rowter.
