Greenfield’s up to bat for funding
One Greenfield resident is taking a swing at starting up a softball program for ages 10 to 16 to give area children a positive activity.
Greenfield Recreation Association Director, Colleen Shannon is receiving $500 in funding from the Region of Queens Municipality to help start the program.
“We’ve got this great little community and the ball field,” she began. “We’re not close to anything really, because we’re so far from anywhere I want to try to give the kids opportunities to have something to do.”
On Aug. 12 the recommendation by the Region of Queens Municipality’s Committee of the Whole to council was to approve a community recreation assistance program grant of $500.
The total start-up cost for the softball program is $740.
The regular council meeting took place Aug. 18.
“There’s a really great group of kids here in Greenfield,” said Shannon. “I know they’d be really excited about this and respectful.”
She hopes to start the softball program the week of Aug. 18, if council approves funding.
She is also looking for volunteers.
“We want as much community involvement as possible,” she stated.
For equipment donations and registration, contact Shannon at 685-2521.
Membership will cost $5.
